Well, here we are! The election ends tomorrow, and one way or the other we’ll know. As we head into Election Day and the ensuing indeterminate time period of counting ballots, I don’t have any predictions for you. As I’ve said the whole time, no one knows what’s going to happen. And there’s no polling data, vibes check, or predictive mechanism that can change that.
But here’s what I do know: no matter what happens, what we did matters. It matters that we’ve spent the past few months talking to each other about the kind of country we want to live in. It matters that we’ve been talking about how politics influences our lives, how we can use politics to make each other’s lives better. Connecting with each other, reminding each other that we live in the same country, that this democracy belongs to all of us and that we all have a say - it really, really matters. Because whether we win or lose, we’re going to need that connection, that belief in our own power and what we can do together, and the knowledge that the future is ours to build.
There’s still plenty to do for the next 36 hours, and it’s never too late to get involved. Whether you’re looking for your next volunteer shift or your first, here are some options:
Help with ballot curing! Ballot curing is when you reach out to folks when there is an issue with their ballot so they can come in and correct it. It’s one of the phone banks where folks are nicer and even often grateful because they also want to make sure their vote counts. And in a super close election, this can make a huge difference.
To paraphrase a west wing quote, there’s a moment after you cast the die but before it hits the table. Breathe and you’ll change the way it lands. Let’s keep going until the dice hit the table.
See you on the other side! And in the meantime enjoy these pretty pictures.
Sara, Your hard work has provided us all with a shining example of what we can each do to make a difference. Thank you.
